Why the Name Kape Maria
People ask us this all the time, usually expecting a sweet story about the owner or a grandmother or a great-aunt. So we’ll let you in on a little secret: there’s no Maria in our family. Not a lola, not a tita, not a cousin twice removed.
The name comes from our barangay. This little corner of Lagonoy is home, and we wanted the coffee house to carry the name of the place that raised us. Kape Maria isn’t named after a person — it’s named after a community.
And that’s really the whole point. We’re a small town living a quiet, provincial kind of life, and we wanted to build something that belonged to everyone here. A space to share. Somewhere the neighborhood could gather, linger, and feel a little more like itself. Naming it after the barangay felt right, because this place was never meant to be just ours.
So when people come in, sit down, order a cup, and stay a while — that’s what keeps Kape Maria going. Not a Maria in the family, but the whole barangay of them.
